Colin Romisher’s four goals lead Revere past Highland

          By Michael Beaven
          Special to the Beacon Journal

BATH TWP.: Facing an early deficit turned into no problem for the Revere boys soccer team on Tuesday night.

Not with senior forward Colin Romisher running around in his No. 12 Minutemen jersey.

Romisher scored four goals to lift host Revere to a 5-2 victory over Highland in a Suburban League match on InfoCision Field at Joseph F. Pappano Stadium.

The Hornets (3-4-0, 2-2-0) scored first, but Romisher spearheaded the Minutemen’s (8-0-2, 4-0-0) comeback.

“I love it, scoring five goals as a team is just awesome,” said Romisher, who has 12 goals and two assists this season. “We need to come out every game fired up. I think this is three or four games now where we have got down in the first 10 to 15 minutes 1-0, but we can still bring it back, which is a good thing.”

Highland took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when senior defender Brandon Poling scored a goal from about 10 yards away following a corner kick by senior Ryan Sefcik.

“They had that early opportunity and took advantage of it,” Revere coach Sandor Jakab said. “I think that woke us up a little bit. We were fortunate with a couple of calls and created good opportunities for ourselves. We put ourselves in positions to be successful and good teams do that.”

Romisher proceeded to score the next two goals to make it 2-1 at halftime in favor of Revere, which went 20-3-0 last season and finished as state runner-up to Dayton Carroll in Division II.

His first goal came in the 22nd minute off a penalty kick from 12 yards out after he drew a foul about 15 yards from the goal to set up the shot. Romisher’s second goal, in the 27th minute, was assisted by junior forward Mike Santucci.

“We knew we had to come into this game focused,” Jakab said. “This is a key league game, the fourth one of the year. Highland is a very strong team. We knew that this would be a fight from the beginning as they wanted to impose their will on us and we wanted to do the same thing on them.”

Revere’s advantage grew to 3-1 in the 49th minute, when junior defender Drew Kimberly took a free kick from 25 yards away and sophomore defender Adam Manteghi got a touch on the ball near the net for a goal.

Junior Adam Holowecky cut Highland’s deficit to 3-2 with a goal in the 54th minute near the net after a deflection. Poling set up the goal by kicking the ball 55 yards in the air on a restart following a foul.

Highland senior goalkeeper Brad Sievers saved a Romisher penalty kick in the 61st minute.

Romisher then secured a hat trick in the 71st minute after sophomore Nolan Dyko and freshman Luke Kasson set up the goal, and scored his final goal in the 74th minute.

“That was a typical Suburban League slugfest right there,” Highland coach Bob Sefcik said. “Unfortunately, I think the officials let the game get away. I think our boys proved themselves tonight to everybody who was here watching the game. I am proud of how my guys played. We feel like this game was stolen from us.”

Revere goalkeeper senior Nathaniel Kostoff made five saves. Minutemen seniors Max Palazzo and Matt Bezbatchenko were also solid as starters with freshman Brady Tieland, junior Eric Zeno and sophomore Brandon Taylor.

Jakab said 12 seniors graduated from last season’s Revere team, and that just four starters returned.

Highland posted a 13-2-1 overall record last year and a 7-0-0 mark in league play. It defeated Revere in the regular season 4-1 last year and won the Suburban League title. Revere avenged that loss with a 4-3 triumph in a Division II district semifinal match.

          September 17, 2001
Revere continued their winning ways with a 4-1 victory over Aurora.  Eric Zeno scored first, beating the goalkeeper near post.  The Minutemen came out charging in the second half with 3 goals in ten minutes to seal the win.  Mike Santucci scored a great header goal off of an Eric Zeno assist.  Hazem Najjar scored next off of a Colin Romisher pass and CJ Hlay wrapped up the scoring with a nice shot to the corner.  Another solid defensive performance allowed only one Aurora shot on goal early in the game.

          September 15, 2011
The varsity soccer team showed great fight and desire earning a 1-0 win over a very strong GlenOak squad.  Max Palazzo, with sheer determination and hustle set up the goal which was scored by Colin Romisher.  Great defense in the second half sealed the victory!

Roundup: Revere boys soccer takes charge in SL race

          By JEFF BREWER & STAFF

BATH TWP.: The Suburban League boys soccer race has parted like the Red Sea and Ohio's third-ranked Revere Minutemen are in the driver’s seat.

On Tuesday evening, the host Minutemen gave Nordonia, the only other 2-0 team in the league, its first loss – 1-0 – and with four SL matches to go coach Sandor Jakab’s team is poised to do something last year's state runner-up squad could not accomplish: win the SL title.

Senior striker Colin Romisher headed home junior wing Eric Zeno’s cross 30 seconds into the match and Revere (5-0-2, 3-0-0) made it stand up.

“Sometimes when you score an early goal like that the momentum that you start with the steam almost comes out of your sails,” Jakab said. ‘We certainly tried to score and they stopped a couple of really good opportunities.

“The puzzle is starting to take shape for us.”

Revere sophomore goalkeeper Joel Gerberich was required to make three saves. The Minutemen had 18 shots compared to 5 for the Knights.

Nordonia sophomore goalkeeper Jonah Cercek made a brilliant save with 18:38 left in the match to keep it 1-0.

The Knights served three free kicks into the box in the final 10 minutes, but could not cash in. Freshman Jermaine Muse flicked a header toward goal with 2:49 left, however, Gerberich handled it easily.

For Nordonia (5-2-1, 2-1-0), which opened the season 5-0-1, including wins over the Highland and Wadsworth, the loss was a setback. Still Knights coach Jake Cooper believes his team has exceeded expectation.

“Giving up a goal 30 seconds in is a tough pill to swallow,” Cooper said. “We didn’t come out ready to go. They are ranked third in the state and I thought we had a good game plan ready.

“We have a long way to go. Anything can happen. This league is still definitely up in the air.”

Cooper admitted that a 6-1 loss last week to former Northeast Ohio Conference division opponent Valley Forge was a “wake-up call.” But that his team proved tonight “we showed tonight we are still ready to play for the season.  We were definitely floating on Cloud 9 for a little while.”

The Knights graduated nine seniors from last season’s 9-7-2 squad and their fast start this year has caught everyone by surprise.

“We’re still in a better position than I thought we would be with only losing two games out of our first eight,” Cooper said.

Revere took it to Copley and came home with a big 3-2 Suburban League victory.  Colin Romisher led the way with 2 goals and Eric Zeno's pressure on the Copley defense created an own goal by Copley.  The varsity team improves to 4-0-2 and 2-0 in the Suburban League, and is ranked third this week in the Ohio high school state soccer poll.

The junior varsity team improved their record to 4-1 by defeating Copley 3-1.  On loan from the varsity team, Hazem Najjar scored the first goal making it 1 to 0. From that point, Ahmad Khatib and Clay Malyj linked up twice giving the Minutemen two more goals.
